Project Description
Client: Astra Construction Ltd
The scheme involved the provision of a new fully signalized crossroads junction along the R611 Cork Road. This is the main road serving the commuter town of Carrigaline and has an Average Annual Daily Traffic in excess of 20,000 vehicles per day.
The new junction allowed access to the residential zoned lands at Shannonpark. The existing R611 Cork Road was widened to a 4-lane width and a pavement overlay provided for a length of approximately 360m. The new Link Road is serving Phases 1&2 of the Janeville Housing Estate with several further phases still to be constructed. By completion the Link Road will be 1km long and will connect the R611 Road to the Fernhill/Rock Road whilst serving an estimated 1200 new residential units as well as a new school.
The Janeville Link Road was designed to DMURS standard as is appropriate for the 50km/hr speed limit. Off road cycle lanes have been provided along the entirety of the Link Road as well as the length of the R611 works. Traffic calming features in the form of junction tabletops and raised pedestrian crossings have been included along the Link Road. A 3m wide landscaped central island 250m in length acts as a gateway feature whilst also delivering traffic calming benefits.
The scheme included a full in-house public lighting design which was undertaken by MHL in consultation with Cork County Council, as well as the grounding of existing 38kV ESB lines and the installation of a road culvert over an existing stream which runs through the site.
