Crosshaven Housing Development

MHL were appointed by Cork County Council following a tender award for construction stage engineering services including Access Road Design, Retaining Wall design, Design of Raft foundations on piles and services construction stage design. The scheme was prepared to Part 8 planning stage by the Architect’s Department of Cork County Council. The project was successfully completed in early 2008 by MMD Builders.

Midleton Northern Relief Road

Midleton Northern Relief Road – Phase 1

MHL & Associates Ltd. Consulting Engineers were engaged by Cork County Council to prepare drawings and relevant documents for the provision of the Midleton Northern Relief Road - Phase 1. This included the planning, tender and construction stages. The Relief Road will connect the Cork Road to the Mill Road and will also provide access to zoned commercial lands at Knockgriffin, Midleton. Co Cork.

The proposed Relief Road connected Cork Road with Mill Road (1.6km) and provided access to the zoned residential and commercial lands at Knockgriffin Midleton Co Cork. The project included two new MOVA controlled signalised junctions. The project also includes the construction of a Railway Bride & River Bridge and road construction on soft ground. MHL & Associates were the lead Consulting Engineers. The project was opened to traffic in March 2009.

Whitechurch Housing Development

Whitechurch Housing Development

Client : DBW Construction Ltd

Construction Value: €35M

MHL were responsible for all engineering design and engineering supervision on this Housing project designed by RORSA Architects and built by Bowen Construction. Phase 1 of this development was completed in 2008 with phases 2&3 currently on hold.

MHL were also responsible for the Sanitary Engineering. This contract provided Whitechurch Village with a 3000 P.E. Sewage Treatment Plant and a 900cub.m. Water Supply. The treated effluent was pumped 6.5km to Cork City’s Main Drainage System and the project was completed in 2008.

MHL Consulting Engineers were the lead engineers for the planning, design and construction of this prestigious residential development comprising of detached houses and three storey apartment blocks with underground parking.

This prestigious residential development is located in one of the most desirable areas of Cork . The design team included Richard Rainey Architects, McCutcheon Mulcahy Planning Consultants and MHL Consulting Engineers. Frinaila Developments were the client with an estimated construction cost of €15m.

Construction
The construction of this development was through a design build process with builders being asked to submit a lump sum price to complete the scheme. Bowen Construction were the successful tender with the design team being carried through from the planning stage. Construction involved a mixture of techniques: Timber framed detached housing units Reinforced concrete substructure for the underground car parking Steel Frame structural elements on a Transfer Slab for the apartment blocks

College Road Urban Renewal

College Road Refurbishment Project

Client : Cork City Council and UCC

Project Cost: €3.5M

M.H.L & Associates were consulting engineers on the College Road Refurbishment Project. The contract was one of the first prepared to the new Conditions of Contract issued by the Department of Finance February 2007. The project was completed in December 2008. The Cost of the Works was €3.5Million approx. The Project was co-funded by Cork City Council and UCC.

The proposed site of the Works with a total area of approximately 20,000 square metres included setting back of UCC boundaries, widening of existing road way and footpaths, construction of raised speed tables in granite, installation of traffic signals, upgrading the public lighting, lining, signage, broadband, drainage, water mains, reconstruction of roadway and footpaths, street furniture and landscaping and other ancillary works necessary for the completion of the contract.

Estuary Business Park

Estuary Business Park, Carrigaline, Co. Cork

This 30m diameter roundabout was designed and constructed as part of the development of the Estuary Business Park, Carrigaline on behalf of the development section of Cork County Council. Following a tender design competition, where applicants were required to submit potential designs for the site in question in addition to their fee proposal, MHL Consulting Engineers were appointed to carry out the detailed design of the site in accordance with the preliminary layout submitted.

Design Elements

The site is located adjacent to the R612 Crosshaven Road on the outskirts of Carrigaline. Given its proximity to the Owenaboy River and its associated estuary the flooding potential of the site had to be determined at an early stage. To this end a comprehensive flood study was carried out in association with Cork County Council and the impact of developing the lands assessed. A minimum finished design level for the various infrastructural elements was set accounting for the impact of global warming on tidal patterns into the future. This was followed by a detailed site investigation study to determine the level of imported fill required. In this instance it was possible to balance the cut & fill requirements of the site with capping material being the only imported earthworks required. To comply with sustainable urban drainage systems (SUDS) and to enhance the environmental quality of the site open ponds were incorporated for storm water retention. This system was designed in association with the Irish Fisheries Board to minimise disturbance to the existing river bed. During dry periods the ponds were designed to become a wetlands area with intensive planting of reeds and other water based plants being carried out. The result was a habitat for wildlife birds as well as being an amenity for the site. The construction of the infrastructural elements of the site was carried out by Martin O'Callaghan Contractor following a competitive tendering process. The development of the site took 1.0 year and was completed on time and within budget. To date a number of sites have been sold and buildings erected.

Crean’s Cross House Development

MHL provided engineering and civil design services for the planning and construction of this 2,400 sq.ft house located at Crean's Cross, Co. Cork. The site, located at the Crean's Cross junction of the R619 and the R579 required MHl to carry out a speed survey on the R579 as part of the provision of a detailed junction analysis required as part of the planning process. In addition a site suitability assessment to the latest EPA Code of Practice for Wastewater Treatment And Disposal Systems Serving Single Houses was carried out on the site. Our in-house architectural technician provided the client with a custom design for the house and garage.

Construction Stage The house is currently under construction using traditional concrete block with elements of steel to support open areas and the roof construction. The use of Ecojoists for the 1st floor allowed for greater spans and a reduction in the depth of bearing walls. In terms of achieving energy efficiency a 100mm cavity is provided, partially filled with 60mm of insulation giving a U Value 0.25 m²·K/W and it is proposed to dry-line the inside leaf of all external walls to further improve on the overall energy rating expected to be B1. The heating system proposed will use a condenser gas boiler supplemented by solar roof panels. In relation to sewage disposal the installation of a ECT-10 Eco Wastewater Treatment system achieving a final effluent standard of 20:30 (Biochemical Oxygen Demand:Suspended Solids) or better is proposed. Fully treated effluent is then discharged to the percolation drainage area. The location has a public water supply.

MHL were responsible for all engineering design and engineering supervision on this housing project which consisted of 700 residential units (consisting of a mixture of housing and apartment units) & Shopping Centre development, 80m diameter access roundabout on the N25, 2km of internal road network as well as all associated infrastructure.

MHL provided all construction stage design services and certification for the client.

Phase 1 : 80m Diameter Roundabout on the N25. MHL were project managers since initial pre-planning consultation with Kilkenny County Council, TIA, sizing of the roundabout and lodgement of planning application in 2001 to practical completion today.

Phase 2 : Construction of 700 houses & Shopping Centre development as well as all associated infrastructure.

Signalisation of the Dock Road, Limerick

The signalisation of the Dock Road in Limerick

The Scheme included the following: -

The signalisation of two existing junctions including, Courtbrack Avenue / N69 Dock Road and Atlas Avenue / N69 Dock Road and the construction of a new traffic signal junction at Alandale Development / N69 Dock

Construction of 8 sets of traffic lights, 7 pedestrian crossings, 13 primary traffic signal aspects, 7 secondary traffic signal aspects, 16 pedestrian signal and all associated drainage, loop detectors, tactile pavement, ducting and services.

The contract involved widening of the existing carriageway in the vicinity of the junction to provide additional lanes.

Consulting Engineers were engaged by two developers namely Castlelands Construction and Astra Construction to prepare drawings and relevant documents for the provision of the Carrigaline Southern Relief Road. This included the planning, tender and construction stages. The Relief Road will connect the Crosshaven Road (R612) and the Kinsale Road (R611) and will also provide access to zoned residential lands at Kilmoney, Carrigaline. Co Cork.
